Esteban and Evelyn |
Esteban Cortez and Evelyn Rivera ( http://eyetango.net ) are among the best tango performers and instructors of their generation in Montevideo, Uruguay. Their youth, strength and creativity let them express a wide range of styles, from live shows with orchestras of diverse tendencies, to recorded music, and interpretation from Canyengue to Fantasia.
In recent years, they have focused on Nuevo Tango, helping to innovate and popularize new elements, and modernizing the dance for contemporary music. Since 2002 they have travelled the world presenting tango workshops in Europe and Asia, and also appear in the stage show "Flor de Tango".
This is their fourth year visiting Singapore. They will be spending a month in Singapore and the nearby cities, and help create interest in tango among younger people.
About the Instructors
Esteban started his dance education in classical dance, contemporary dance, and folk dance of Uruguay. In 1995 he began to study tango under Argentinian masters such as Osvaldo Zotto, Luis Solanas, Raul Bravo and Los Dinzel. He has worked with the orchestras of Ruben de Lapuente, Donato Racciatti, Atilio Stamponi and Coor Tango Orchaetra, and also with some Uruguay artist such as Malena Muyaa Gustavo Nocetti and Horacio Ferre. In 1998 he was invited to choreograph for the Montevideo Philarmonic Orchestra. He produced the show Naturalmente Tango and started the tango company Tangotan.
Evelyn trained in ballet in Escuela Nacional de Danza. Since 1996 she has studied under some of the best Tango teachers in the Rio de la Plata, like Raul Bravo, Elena Vilarino, Osvaldo Zotto, Jose Artigas and Omar Correa.
About Tango in Uruguay
The Rio de la Plata separates the Argentinian capital Buenos Aires from the Uruguayan capital Montevideo. Historically and culturally, the two neighbouring cities are closely linked. The inhabitants of these two port cities are called porteños, and it is here, against the backdrop of European immigrants and economic hardship, that Tango first developed. Some of the earliest and best known tango compositions, like "La Cumparsita", were written by Uruguayan composers. Today, Montevideo boasts the second most active Tango population in South America.
Meet the Maestros
: Esteban and Evelyn will perform exhibition dances at these milongas. Don't miss the chance to see them in action!

Other Issues
- No partner? You are encouraged to come with a
partner of the same level -- best way is to come for
practicas before the workshop to meet other tangueros,
and make arrangement to come to the same session. For
lower level classes, there
will be rotation of partners during the class for
unpartnered participants. For higher level classes,
you need to have a fixed partner for best learning
results.
- Videography Please ask instructor for
permission before taping. Instructor usually do a
recap of the lesson in the last 10 minutes
for Q&A -- that is the best time to record.
- Late Registration Please note the cut-off
date for pre-registration. If you miss the
deadline, you can still enjoy the lower rate
by taking a season pass of 4 or more classes.
Once you are pre-registered you can add more classes
at the same preferred rate later.
- Cancellation of class We reserve the right
to cancel a class if the number of participants is too few.
You will be given a credit to redeem at another workshop.
- No-Shows
We assume all tangueros to be credit-worthy, so we do not
ask for pre-payment when you register. But if you fail
to show up for a class after booking, your
"good credit" record will become tainted and in future you
may be required to pre-pay for class.
